Deep Skin, 2020
Deep Skin is a speculative design project that proposes how bio- and nanotechnology can be used to help people redesign their appearances.
Concept
The project imagines a future where advances in biotechnology and nanotechnology enable new forms of appearance modification and self-expression. It explores the ethical, social, and personal implications of such technologies.
Research Questions
- How might bio- and nanotechnology change our relationship with appearance?
- What are the implications of programmable, redesignable bodies?
- How do speculative technologies challenge our understanding of identity and self-expression?
Approach
As a speculative design project, Deep Skin uses design fiction and critical design methodologies to explore potential futures rather than proposing immediate technological solutions. The work invites viewers to consider the boundaries between human enhancement, self-expression, and technological intervention.
