Freshin' Up, 2020

Freshin' up is a proposal for addressing food deserts in East Harlem. Through partnership with GrowNYC, freshin' up aims to build community and capacity through community education, and growing the number of community and rooftop gardens. LinkNYC and Subway signages serve as information booths that connect the community to more resources.

Concept

The project addresses food access disparities in East Harlem through a multi-faceted approach that combines education, infrastructure, and community partnerships. By leveraging existing urban infrastructure like LinkNYC kiosks and subway signage, the proposal creates touchpoints for community engagement and resource connection.

Approach

  • Partnership with GrowNYC for established community relationships
  • Community education programs focused on food growing and nutrition
  • Expansion of community and rooftop gardens
  • Urban information design through LinkNYC and subway signage
  • Capacity building for sustainable community-led solutions
